One day you’re full of pep – the next day you’re dragging. Why? Well, if you’re getting enough rest, there could be some emotional reasons that are zapping your energy. That’s according to integrative medicine expert, Dr. Tasneem Bhatia. Here are some of the things that can drag your energy down:
- Toxic relationships. It can be anything from an overly needy friend to a passive-aggressive coworker. How do you know who’s robbing your energy? Pay attention to how you feel after you’re with people. Do you feel drained? That’s your energy vampire right there. Try to minimize your interactions with that person. And counteract their toxicity by spending more time with people who make you feel energized. You may also want to check to see if you’re an energy vampire. When you call people, do they rush off the phone? When you’re with them, do they look around the room? If so, you may want to adjust your own behavior.
- Clutter is another energy drain. Just looking at clutter makes people feel tired because the eye has nowhere to land. It also raises your stress hormones, which can wear you out.
- Your emotions. If you feel wiped out by 8 o’clock at night, it could be your emotions from the day coming to a head. Early evening is when people are most emotional and that can cause fatigue. A natural reaction is to bump up your energy by eating carbs, but that’ll just drain you even more. Instead, front load your calories – eating more earlier in the day – and a lighter meal at night. And to deal with your emotions, write them down. When you can see them in black and white, you’ll be able to look at them more rationally and see if they’re really worth the emotional energy you’re giving them.
