Should Babies Have Pierced Ears?

That's the latest parenting controversy. It was ignited last week by a letter printed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s advice column, which called infant ear piercing “borderline child abuse.” A lot of Moms fought back, saying it's a cultural thing. Others said, "Why would you want to punch holes in an innocent baby?" While some people think it's not right because the child doesn't have a choice in the matter - and it's fashion issue, not a health issue.
So, what about the health of the baby? Dr. Tanya Altmann, a pediatrician and spokesperson for the American Academy of Pediatrics, routinely pierces babies’ ears in her office. But she does prefer to wait until babies are at least four months old, so they’ve had two rounds of vaccinations.
