Let’s protect you from cancer! Here and now, we’ve compiled a list of easy lifestyle changes that are proven to cut your cancer risk in half. They come from the book A World Without Cancer, by Dr. Margaret Cuomo:
- Limit the number of contaminants you bring into your home, like the chemicals in cleaning products, or the pesticides on produce. Several new studies show we can reduce our cancer risk by simply washing all our produce before eating it, or opening windows while we clean.
- Limit your exposure to radiation. At the doctor’s office, always ask whether a test or scan uses radiation. And if it does, ask why the test is recommended, or if it’s even necessary. Because sometimes there are alternative tests that get the job done without radiation – like an MRI or ultrasound.
- Use a headset or Bluetooth. Even though no study has ever shown a direct link between cell phone radiation and brain tumors, Dr. Cuomo asks why we should even take the chance? Whenever possible, use a headset, speakerphone, or Bluetooth device.
- Changing your diet. Dr. Cuomo says eat more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains – especially berries, tomatoes, and spinach. These all have valuable cancer-fighting properties.
- Eat less red meat, and more fish. Because many studies link red meat to a higher risk for prostate, stomach, and colorectal cancer. But fish tends to be low in saturated fat, and high in omega-3 fatty acids, which are proven to reduce the inflammation that helps cancer develop.
