What deadly epidemic is sweeping across North America, infecting everyone from children to adults? It’s the flu! And experts warn this flu season is slated to be one of the longest and deadliest in history. So, here are the top 3 things you need to know about the flu to stay safe:
- You’re at risk for the next 3 months! Dr. Thomas Frieden is the director of the C-D-C. He says that new statistics from hospitals across North America show that the flu season has officially begun. And you need to be on high alert until April, when it should die down!
- Your risk of catching it is at its highest for about the next month. Experts say the virus usually peaks in February, but it could randomly flare up at any time. For example, flu activity peaked twice during the 2009 H-1-N-1 pandemic – once in the spring and again in the fall.
- Researchers are already working on creating a more powerful flu shot for next year! C-D-C officials say that researchers are developing a new flu vaccine that will protect you against four strains of the deadly virus – which is one more than usual. And it’ll be available in time for the next flu season.
