Certain foods really can boost your mood and it’s not psychological. They actually trigger the chemicals and hormones that can mellow out everything from anxiety to anger. Here are the foods that can treat certain moods, courtesy of Dr. Mehmet Oz:
- If you’re the anxious or angry type, eat bananas or brazil nuts regularly. They’re loaded with the mineral selenium. Higher levels of selenium help decrease anxiety and depression, and make you less likely to fly off the handle. Other selenium-rich foods include tuna, garlic, and mushrooms.
- If you’re stressed, try citrus or bell peppers. Studies show that fruits and veggies packed with vitamin C can lower your levels of stress hormone cortisol, which helps keep your blood sugar steady. In fact, Vitamin C may actually stop stress before it starts by reducing your body’s production of stress-hormones. Eat the foods raw because vitamin C can break down during cooking. And it takes effect quickly, which is why public speaking experts say to eat an orange before a performance or presentation.
- Need help shutting your mind off at bedtime? Try tart cherry juice. One study found that 2 cups of cherry juice a day – one in the morning, and one before bed – helps people sleep. Why? Because it’s high in melatonin, the hormone that jumpstarts your sleep cycle.
- Ready to sharpen your focus? Eat several servings a day of deeply colored fruits, like plums and cranberries. They contain the type of antioxidants that help protect brain neurons, and improve memory.
