There’s a new diet or weight loss trick in the news every day, but they aren’t all legit. So, here’s the run down of the latest weight loss claims, according to nutrition expert Joy Bauer:

  • Will using apple cider vinegar on your food help you lose weight? Yes. Because all types of vinegar contain an acid which is proven to help stabilize blood sugar, which, in turn, keeps your appetite under control. Plus vinegar tends to increase our sense of satisfaction when we eat, so we don’t need to have as much food to feel “full.” Bauer says all you need is about two tablespoons of vinegar on a salad to get the benefits.
  • Can drinking water before a meal help you lose weight? Yes. That claim’s based on a study showing that dieters who drank two glasses of water before meals generally lost 44-percent more weight than dieters who didn’t drink water. Researchers say it works because water helps fill up your stomach, so you feel full sooner, and eat less!
  • If you temporarily increase your calorie intake one day a week, will it “shock” your metabolism into working harder the rest of the week, so you’ll lose more weight? Bauer says no, because the only way to lose weight is to take in fewer calories than your body needs, not more. So, stick to having a consistent low-calorie diet every day, and if you really want to give your metabolism a boost, add more exercise to your daily routine, not food.
