How would you like to extend your life by 10 solid years? You can by eating the right “bonus foods” – certain foods to add to your normal diet that’ll prevent heart disease, strokes, and kidney problems. It’s the foundation of a new book called “The Bonus Years Diet” based on research done by epidemiologist Dr. Oscar Franco. Here’s how he came up with the idea.

In 2003, the British Medical Journal had an article that said ‘wouldn’t it be great if there was one, all-purpose pill that was made up of folic acid, aspirin, and blood-pressuring lowering drugs.’ The article said if everybody over the age of 55 took this hypothetical pill, we’d all live at least a decade longer – maybe more. Well, Dr. Franco figured that we don’t need to pop a pill to do all those things – they can be achieved naturally by adding certain “bonus foods” to our diet.

Then, a physician and trained chef named Ralph Felder heard about Dr. Franco’s bonus foods and wanted to turn them into a diet he could give to his patients. So, they got together and devised a menu that translated the science into a healthy way to eat – by figuring out the exact “dosages” of the bonus foods. For example:

  • The first bonus food: Nuts. Sprinkling 2 ounces on your cereal or salad every day reduces your bad cholesterol by 14%.
  • Dark Chocolate. Savor 2 ounces a day, and your risk of heart attack and stroke drops by 11%.
  • Garlic. Adding just one clove daily to pasta, salad or a stir-fry drops your bad cholesterol, and lowers your risk of heart disease and stroke by a third.
  • Wine. A 5 ounce glass of red wine every evening will cut your risk of heart disease by one third.

If you want to go further, The Bonus Years Diet outlines 30 days of menus that deliver just the right “dosages” of the bonus foods. No pill popping necessary.
