It’s common sense that if you want to drop a few pounds you should eat less and hit the gym. But according to ABC News, what you might not know is that getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best things you can do to get thin.

Dr. David Katz is the medical contributor to Good Morning America. And in an interview, he said there’s convincing evidence that getting plenty of sleep can help control weight. How?

Well, new studies show that getting less than the recommended 8 hours boosts our levels of ghrelin, a hormone that makes you hungry. And at the same time, it suppresses another hormone – leptin – that’s the one that makes you feel full.

And experts say they’re starting to see a link between people sleeping less and weighing more: two-thirds of people don’t get eight hours of sleep a night - and about the same percentage are overweight or obese.

But getting enough sleep helps in more ways than just controlling hormones. If you’re rested, you’ll be more energetic and more likely to feel like doing physical activity. And you’ll be more clear-headed and careful about the foods you eat.

So if you want to stay healthy and in shape, make it a priority to get your zzzz’s.
