Did You Know You Spend A Third of Your Life Working?

The 8 hours we spend at work every day can shape our life - and impact our life outside of work in a big way. So, it's important to be happy about what we're doing. But what does the trick? A fatter paycheck? That couldn't hurt, but it might not be the answer.

I was forced to think about what made me happiest at work years ago when I was at Entertainment Tonight. I eventually decided to pursue my true passion, composing and playing music. But it doesn't always have to be such a major change. A recent study asked people what makes them happy on the job and found there are some little things that can make a huge difference.

• Have a best friend at work. That tops the wish list for happiness at work. We also want to know what's expected of us on the job and have all the materials we need to get our work done.
• Having a good rank and title. It matters more than a bigger paycheck. Researchers say it makes employees feel respected and appreciated.
• Having a more flexible schedule also makes workers happy. As an added bonus, employees are more productive. Because, when we're not worried that we won't be home in time to be with our kids, we can focus more on the task at hand.
• Employees also want to be able to collaborate with others, it makes us feel we're in a friendlier environment.

Those aren't the only things that can help make us all happier at work, but it's definitely a good start. Then again, sometimes, you need to take a risk and make a bigger change. It worked for me. Back
